miGut - Health project to Host International Symposium on Predicting and Preventing Inflammatory Bowel Disease on the Faroe Islands
Researchers, patients, and clinicians gather in Tórshavn for the miGut-Health symposium on the 16th June.
On the 16th June, 2025, the Faroe Islands will host a one-day public symposium organised by the miGut-Health consortium, bringing together international researchers, healthcare professionals, and patients to address one of the most pressing public health issues facing the region: inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Organised by the EU-funded miGut-Health project, the event aims to share the latest scientific advances in IBD prediction and prevention, while engaging directly with the IBD community. The symposium, titled “Science Talks to the IBD Community,” will take place at the University of the Faroe Islands (Kongshøll, Fróðskaparsetrið), Tórshavn, from 10:00 to 16:30. Participation is free, but space is limited and registration is required by 6 June, 2025, at registration link.
With the Faroe Islands reporting the world’s highest incidence of IBD, the event offers a unique opportunity for local communities to hear from leading experts in gut health, including speakers from Harvard Medical School, Hvidovre Hospital, and the University of the Faroe Islands.
Key highlights include:
- Presentations on omics-based biomarker discovery and environmental risk factors
- Insights into miGut-Health’s innovative approaches to personalised prevention through diet and digital tools
- A roundtable discussion featuring both scientific experts and patient organisation representatives
- Opportunities for open dialogue between patients and researchers
“We are committed to making scientific progress meaningful and accessible to those it impacts most,” said Prof. Andre Franke from Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB/UKSH), coordinator of miGut-Health. “By connecting with the IBD community in the Faroe Islands, we hope to inform, empower, and inspire collective action toward earlier diagnosis and better prevention strategies.”
The symposium also underscores miGut-Health’s mission to identify early warning signs of IBD and promote proactive, personalised approaches to maintaining gut health. By integrating cutting-edge molecular research with community-based engagement, the project aims to redefine how chronic gut conditions are understood and managed across Europe.
